Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand

Collapsible, stable and tough enough for the shop or job site

Miter saws have come a long way in the last decade with better models now sporting increased accuracy and versatility that make them valuable in the shop or on the job site. The problem is getting them there without damaging yourself or the saw and then being able to use it safely to make use of that accuracy. The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand (Model GTA3800) shown in this review is a safe, accurate and collapsible solution that can make getting your miter saw to where you need it less of a hassle.

The Basics

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand is made from tough, heavy-wall aluminum extrusions bolstered with tough steel components at high-stress points. That includes steel extension arms and roller work supports that make this system remarkable capacity, stability and ease of use. The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand weighs 43-lbs without a saw which is testament to the materials used to make it. The upper surface of the main table/extrusion is 5-1/2”-wide and 2-3/4”-tall with its upper surface 32-1/2" above the ground. With the material supports fully retracted the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand is 62"-long. Pull those supports out all of the way and the length grows to 153" overall. Those extensions allow the user to work with stock up to 16-ft-long.

The four swing in legs are made from tough aluminum that is 1-3/8”-diameter. One leg has an adjustable foot that lets the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand conform to less than perfectly flat ground.

The adjustable material supports at each end of the body have height-adjustable rollers that let you set them so that the stock lay flat on them and the saw table. Each of the roller assemblies also features a pull-up stop for repetitive cuts. All of these adjustments and functions are tool free. For the occasional things that do need a wrench, one is built into the carry handle on the underside of the main rail.

Assembly

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand comes largely assembled with the legs in the stowed (folded in) position. The instruction manual walks you through the steps necessary to complete the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand quickly and in a logical order. Overall it took me approximately 20-minutes to get the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand ready for the installation of the saw. Keep in mind that my times include stopping to shoot photos, video and take notes.

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand comes with very solid, easy to use saw mounts that let you transport the stand with the saw removed or secured on the stand. Each of the saw mounts has adjustable nuts built in that accept the include bolts and washers. The rear slots for the captured nuts are quite long as Bosch designed these mounts to accept all of their miter saws as well as most competitor’s models. This really is a simple way of mounting the saw and makes removing or re installing it onto the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand very easy and quick without sacrificing any stability.

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand has a stop that you install at the end of the main rail with the tires. The saw is slid to this stop to keep its weight as low as possible while moving it. If you prefer, unlock the saw mounts and you can simply lift the saw (with the mounts still attached) off of the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand to transport it separately if that works better. To reinstall the saw just set it onto the table engaging the mounts and then lock them closed. That’s all there is to it.

The folding legs on the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand have pushbutton locks at the hinge point. Simply push that lock button in and swing the leg up into its stowed position where the locking pin pops into a second hole to secure the leg there. With all four legs stowed you can move the saw using the handhold in the end of the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand opposite of where the tires are. The wheels are 4”-tall with solid rubber tires that are mounted on an axle that puts them 14”-apart to the outside of the tire contact surface for stability.

When you get to where the saw is to be used next just open the legs and turn the adjuster if needed until the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand is stable on the surface. Then either re install the saw (with the mounts) back onto the rail or if it was left on, unlock the mounts and slide the motor to where you need it for the job. That’s it!

In the Shop

Assembly was very close to a no-brainer because most of the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand is put together as it comes from the carton. The remaining assembly is covered well in the instruction manual and should have you up and running in a half hour if not less.

The tough but quick-release saw mount (left) makes it easy to stow the saw separately when that is smart. The extension arms (right) are made from 1-1/2"-steel box tubing to be more than sure that they are strong enough!

I was able to mount my Bosch 4410L Sliding Compound Miter Saw in just a few minutes using the included hardware. I suspect that most miter saws in this class will mount just as easily or close. The mounts are strong and keep the saw stable during use. I like being able to remove the saw with the mounts in seconds and then put it back on in about the same amount of time.

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand does fold up for transport easily and while doing this with the saw still mounted will not be an issue for most, I would rather take it off before folding the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand up. I have an issue with my back that makes this just a safer way of doing it and because of how quickly the mounts and saw can come off, it does not add much time to the process either.

With the saw set up I adjusted the leg to get rid of a small wobble. I also had to adjust the height of the work support rollers the first time to match the height of the saws table but that also took just a couple minutes. After setting the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand up the first time setting it up at a worksite takes just a minute or two.

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand is made very well and shows no signs of flex or anything else that might compromise the accuracy of the cuts made on it. The work supports give you plenty of side-to-side working range to satisfy any woodworker or contractor that I know of. I put 16-feet of board on it and was able to make precise cuts without doing anything special. The pull-up repetitive cut stops are nice and work well. Since the work supports can be set at any distance within their range from the blade you can dial in virtually any cut and make two or two hundred without worry of anything changing.

The working height of the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand with my Bosch 4410L Sliding Compound Miter Saw mounted on it is very comfortable. All of the controls on the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand and the saw itself are easy to access and work as expected.

Conclusions

The Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand is well designed and built and makes using your miter saw where you need it an easy task. Within a few minutes you can get back to working accurately and safely. With a street price of just $260.00 (4-2-2011) this is a piece of equipment that makes sense. If you use a miter saw with any frequency at all, the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand will make getting it set up for use very quick. If you have been using your miter saw balanced on a couple sawhorses or the tailgate of the truck, it’s probably time to check out the Bosch Folding Leg Miter Saw Stand before something embarrassing (or dangerous) happens.
