A common question about the NewWoodworker.com LLC Tool Reviews is why they are mostly positive. That answer is simple as that has been the plan from day one. Initially this concept was forced by a lack of budget with which to buy tools to review that I would not use in my shop. Over the years I have received thousands of requests for reviews and so far not one has been for a product already considered a dud. Though it was blind luck at the start, that original plan of reviewing tools that I would use myself turned out to be what the viewers want.
I have done hundreds of Tool Reviews over the years and following each of them I get questions or suggestions. I read them all and have tried to formulate my reviews to answer the most common of those questions or requests.
What isn’t in question is that viewers want to know everything that they can about a tool, what versions are available, sizes and estimates of actual street prices. As was pointed out recently, that formula can make my Tool Reviews sound like an advertisement to some degree. Because both mediums strive to provide many of the same points of information that comparison is not unfair. I do add actual use (In the Shop) to my Tool Reviews which diverges sharply from the advertising model but that will not satisfy everyone unfortunately. My Tool Review formula must also consider the wide range of experience levels within the thousands of viewers that visit NewWoodworker.com each day. If all of the viewers were veteran woodworkers the reviews could be way shorter. But that is not the case.
I also do not compare a $10 tool to a $100 one. That is not fair to the tools or the viewers. I work hard at evaluating tools in a real-world shop environment, doing things that fall within the intent of the tool and that I can anticipate home-based woodworkers actually doing with that product. Again, that in-shop usage must accommodate the wide range of experience levels of the NewWoodworker.com viewership.
It would be great if one Tool Review format would satisfy everyone that might read it but that simply will not happen in the real world. NewWoodworker.com is visited by thousands of woodworkers each day and within those numbers every possible level of experience is represented. I am convinced that my Tool Reviews must provide a range of information that satisfies the needs of as many of them as possible.
The woodworking marketplace does not appear to be in danger of running out of new, good quality tools so my Tool Reviews will remain largely positive. I just do not have the time or budget (or demand) to intentionally review a product just to trash something in an effort to satisfy a very small number of viewers who consider that to be the only way to legitimatize my Tool Reviews.
