Walnut Box with Inlay

Text, photos and design by Tom Hintz

This box, made of walnut, is another in a series coming from a load of wood I received. The outside dimensions are 5"-tall, 9 3/4"-wide and 7 3/4"-deep. I suspect it will be used as an auxiliary jewelry box.

All four corners have through dovetails, cut in the 5/8"-thick material on my Leigh jig. The bottom is 1/4"-thick, resawn from a 7/8"-thick plank. The bottom panel is set into a dado.

The 3/4"-thick top was treated with an inlay depicting the sun and mountains. The sun is mahogany and the mountains ambrosia maple.

The box was finished with four applications of Danish oil.
